Frequently Asked Questions
How does the Image Cropper tool work?
Upload any image, then drag the orange crop handles on the canvas to define your desired area. You can also type exact pixel values in the X, Y, Width, and Height fields. Choose an optional aspect ratio preset, set the output format and quality, then click "Crop Image" to generate and download the result — all processed entirely in your browser.
What image formats are supported?
The Image Cropper supports JPG/JPEG, PNG, GIF, and WebP images as input. You can export the cropped result as JPEG, PNG, or WebP.
Is my image uploaded to a server?
No. All image processing is done entirely client-side using the HTML5 Canvas API. Your images never leave your device, ensuring complete privacy and fast performance.
What aspect ratio presets are available?
The tool includes presets for Free (no constraint), 1:1 Square, 4:3, 16:9, 3:2, and 2:3 Portrait. Select a preset to lock the crop selection to that ratio as you drag the handles.
How do I crop an image to exact pixel dimensions?
After uploading, use the X, Y, Width, and Height input fields below the preset buttons. These values are in the original image's pixel coordinates, so you can type precise crop dimensions and the canvas will update in real time.
Can I crop an image to a square?
Yes. Select the "1:1 Square" preset and the crop area will be constrained to a perfect square. You can then resize and reposition it on the canvas before exporting.
What quality setting should I use for JPEG?
For most uses, 80–90% quality offers a good balance between file size and visual quality. For photos where file size matters (email attachments, web), try 70–75%. For archiving, keep it at 90–95%. PNG and WebP have lossless options built-in.
What is the maximum image size the tool can handle?
The tool can handle images up to approximately 10–15 MB, depending on your device's memory. For very large images (e.g., 20 MP camera photos), the canvas may take a moment to render. We recommend images under 10 MB for the best experience.
How do I crop an image for social media?
Use the aspect ratio presets that match popular platform requirements: 1:1 Square for Instagram posts and profile pictures; 16:9 for YouTube thumbnails and Twitter header images; 4:3 for general landscape photos. After cropping, you can also use the Image Resizer tool to set exact pixel dimensions.
Can I undo a crop and start over?
Click the "Reset" button to clear the current image and start fresh. You can then upload a new image or re-upload the same one to crop it differently. The crop handles also remain adjustable until you click "Crop Image".
What is rule-of-thirds and does this tool support it?
The rule of thirds is a composition guideline where you divide the frame into nine equal parts with two horizontal and two vertical lines, placing subjects along those lines. This tool displays a subtle rule-of-thirds grid overlay inside the crop selection to help you compose your shot before exporting.
Can I rotate an image before cropping?
The current version of the tool focuses on cropping. For rotation, use a companion tool such as the Image Converter or an external editor, then upload the rotated image here for cropping.
